Case Study:
This clinical study investigated the anti-aging efficacy on the skin of the food supplement ingredient DracoBelle™ Nu.
For this, 32 healthy, female Caucasian volunteers aged 41 – 64, with sun-damaged skin were recruited to take the extract orally (200mg once a day in the morning, together with a glass of liquid for two months) with the pre-condition phase of 14 days, using no anti-aging products on the test area (inner forearm) before the study started.
The aim of the study was to evaluate a set of three age-related parameters/measures on the skin: the epidermis+dermis density, moisturization and elasticity.
Clinical Study Results:
Results after 56 days of intake of DracoBelle™Nu, showed a significant improvement of:
- 4 % in skin moisturisation
- 7 % in elasticity compared to initial conditions was observed.
- A positive trend on Epidermis+dermis density was also measured. An increase of 2.5 % was observed.
Furthermore, study results were confirmed by a questionnaire-based evaluation as
94% of volunteers ‘felt better in their skin’. 75% of volunteers were ‘satisfied by the product performance’ and 72% of volunteers ‘considered their skin to feel more hydrated’.

Mode of Action: Activation of AMPK / FOXO longevity pathway
Dracobelle™Nu deploys beneficial effects by activating the anti-aging and longevity intrinsic pathways of AMPK (AMP-activated kinase) and FOXO (Forkhead box protein 0). It triggers improved collagen and DNA repair, cellular defence, oxidative stress resistance and cell detoxification. The activation of this longevity pathway leads to a rejuvenation of the skin which in turn results in a more youthful and healthy appearing skin. AMPK is an energy sensor that becomes active in response to low energy levels (caloric restriction) as well as when stimulated through exercise. When activated, AMPK stimulates energy production from glucose and fatty acids and inhibits energy consumption. Active AMPK mediates FOXO activity and an increased FOXO activity results in an activation of various anti-aging mechanisms. AMPK and FOXO activities are regulated by their phosphorylation patterns.
Bio-assay Study Results
A cellular assay has been performed in order to evaluate the effect of Dracobelle™Nu on the activation of AMPK and FOXO, which results in a fourfold increase in AMPK activity and a threefold increase in FOXO activity. This is based on phosphorylation levels of both proteins. These results demonstrate on a cellular level that Dracobelle™Nu mimics the positive effects of a low caloric diet and healthy exercise. To investigate the impact of AMPK and FOXO activation on collagen content, nematodes (Caenorhabditis elegans) have been treated with Dracobelle™Nu and collagen gene expression and collagen content have been determined. The collagen gene expression and the final collagen content in nematodes treated with Dracobelle™Nu was significantly higher than in untreated nematodes, clearly demonstrating a collagen boosting effect.
